Tiger Woods and the Golf Industry

‘Tiger Woods have for many years been a large influence on the golf industry. In his recent personal events, it is hard to tell how much the industry will be affected.

Can one person have such a big impact? Does any other sport in the world rely on one person more than anyone for spectators, tv ratings and profit?

Current statistics apparently show TV ratings drop by 45% when Tiger Woods is not playing. It is also rumored to have affected the golf industry by 13 billion dollars. The question is, how much will this affect the kids of today, and general motivation for players? Are we already seeing a decline in golf memberships and course fees?

Tiger recently played in Australia for the first time in 10 years and was the drawcard for a sell out crowd. His apparent appearance fee was 4 million dollars. Although TV ratings are down, are we seeing a decrease in general playing of golf? What about sales or equipment? Time will tell during the course of this year to see if it had any effect, but I suspect it will. Many children today need a role model for their sports, and Tiger had a fair share of the market in this area.
Many nervous golf brands are welcoming the return of Tiger which is rumored to be in about 12 months. Lets hope Tiger is triumphant in his return and returns to the top of his game as the best golfer ever, and perhaps the greatest athlete ever.

All of the golf industry is wishing Tiger a great and restful recovery, and we hope that the golf industry will follow. Tiger has already done so much for the sport and will continue to do so for what could be the most anticipated come backs in the history of the game.

We have already heard sponsors ending their endorsement contracts, but Nike are currently holding onto him. The Nike golf ball range is stronger than ever and new releases are expected. Their wide range of balls and clubs can appeal to all golf skills levels.

We are not seeing a decline in sales of the Nike brand specifically just yet. The northern hemisphere is currently in winter so we probably wont see any significant dent in sales until the summer is over in 6 months.
